The writers of business books tend to fall into two camps: academics with PhDs and management consultants with MBAs. I do not fall neatly into either category. I have a PhD in applied mathematics but have worked in industry my entire career. I have done many things that professors typically do—taught courses to business school students, written technical papers in refereed journals, and authored patents. I have also been a full-time consultant for many years to businesses large and small, often collaborating closely with management consultants.
