Nada El-Zein,    LED Light Energy LLC, Chicago, IL, USA

Abstract

This Chapter endeavors to give the reader a snapshot of current LED technology (as of 2012 or so) and why LEDs have become such an important player in the lighting world. We start with the history of lighting, followed by the invention of LEDs and their technical characteristics. The next sections address how LED fixtures are optimally designed, and what their advantages are, and how they compare to other existing lighting technologies. Finally some examples of LED lighting retrofits are shown as well some glimpses into what future LED research might yield.
