Environmental pollution can be grouped into three main classes: water pollution, air pollution and soil pollution. Water pollution can originate from multiple sources, but common among them is wastewater discharged from domestic, agricultural or industrial facilities and processes. The management of domestic wastewater pollution is one of the targets of the European Council Urban Wastewater Directive (91/271/EEC).
