We are living through extraordinary times, with rates of change that are exponential. More people now live in cities than in the countryside across the globe, and combined with the rapid growth in disruptive digital and manufacturing technologies, we are seeing the wholescale transformation of our planet. For the first time we, as humans, are now in a position to control natural change to a large degree and therefore have a duty of care to consider all our actions systemically on a global basis. This challenge is enormous, and yet it is also timely given that many built environment organisations are long overdue in embedding an environmental Hippocratic Oath of ‘Do No Harm’ into their fundamental ethos.
