5.1. Introduction
Engineers play an important role in global sustainable development by designing production systems for materials, minerals, chemicals, energy, electricity generation and distribution, transportation, buildings and other structures, and consumer products. These designs have impacts on the environment, economies, and societies at spatial scales that vary from local to global and at temporal scales that vary from minutes to decades.
