Optimization is to leverage key learnings in designing effective, efficient, and economic systems.
14.1 Principle
Mathematical model is the best way to describe a physical process so that the mass and energy efficiency of the process could be quantitatively predicted. Before a model could be used for this purpose, it has to be verified, calibrated, and validated. Models could be as simple as a black box at macro-scale or as detailed as some models of quantum chemistry or physics on micro-scale. In most SEE design, models at the elementary reaction level should be adequate. Fortunately, lots of commercial software are available.
