Abstract

Fossil fuels are consumed at a large amount to meet the needs of energy demand and this consumption of fossil fuels has a negative impact on environment and human activities. Biodegradable/ biopolymer electrolytes are the materials composed of salt and solvent having different properties like good ionic conductivity, cost effective, safe to use and good chemical stability. A number of bio-based polymers are used as host polymer in the formation of biodegradable electrolytes. Biodegradable polymer electrolytes are simply prepared by the solution casting method. Free charge carriers and their mobility, glass transition temperature and dielectric constant highly affect their ionic conductivity. Biodegradable electrolytes have been used due to their renewability, environmental stability, and safety. They can meet the energy requirements and hence are renewable made from biomaterials, not consuming fossil fuels and are cost effective. Biodegradable polymer electrolytes have different applications, like fuel cells, batteries, supercapacitors and dye sensitized solar cells etc.
