13.1 The Paris Agreement and the 2 °C target

News related to climate change are widely covered in media (e.g. [1, 2]), and the news published is not positive. Human activities are estimated to have caused global warming of, at minimum 0.8 °C to 1.2 °C above pre-industrial levels. It is likely that global warming will reach a minimum of 1.5 °C between 2030 and 2052 if the rise of GHG emissions continue to increase at the current rate.

With the Paris Agreement [4, 6], policymakers agreed on common targets to limit global warming. The agreement aims for an increase of no more than 2 °C above pre-industrial levels. (It should be noted that in autumn 2020 the European Parliament decided to aim for a target of 55% of 1990 ...
