Depicting the system means communicating the essence of the organization as a system using a document or visual aid. This may mean describing the system using text, visualizing it using paper and pencil, or using a basic software program to map the system. For our purposes, we use the terms depicting, visualizing, mapping, and modeling as synonyms. Depicting the system is the starting place for building a shared understanding of the organization as a system.
