8.4. Psychology Experiments
Suppose that we have designed two forms, Form A and Form B, that allow candidates to record enrolments, and we want to know which is better. One way to measure ‘better’ is to ask which form the candidates prefer to use, either by simple choice, or by rating their qualities on a scale of one to ten.22 An alternative is to measure the speed with which candidates are able to complete the two forms.
The main purpose of this section is to warn the reader of some of the pitfalls involved in such experiments. Although it makes use of some well-known statistical methods, it isn’t an attempt to teach statistics, and the reader who wants more detail is advised to study a statistics textbook.
