Synopsis
Modeling of software systems and hardware systems, along with their associated tools, has been evolving in parallel but with little, if any, effort to integrate software engineering with systems engineering. As we enter the era of Industry 4.0, and with the Internet of Things (IoT) quickly becoming a prevalent reality, the urgent need for a new paradigm that integrates systems engineering with software engineering into a coherent unifying framework is becoming ever more apparent. To address this challenge, we present MAXIM – Methodical Approach to Executable Integrated Modeling – and its implementation environment, OPCloud. The MAXIM framework enables concurrent modeling of the hardware and software system aspects, avoiding the need to make the painful and information‐leaking transition from the abstract, qualitative conceptual system architecting stage to the concrete, detailed, quantitative design stage. Implementing the “holy grail” of model‐based systems engineering (MBSE), MAXIM provides for involving systems engineering and software engineering professionals, as well as mechanical, electric, electronic, aerospace, and human factors engineers, all relating to the same conceptual‐computational executable model as the most reliable, dynamic, up‐to‐date, and evolving source ...
