As we said in the first edition, this book is not simply the result of our own work, including more than fifty years of experience, but many others have contributed to our ideas. Just after World War II, in England a small group of theorists and managers, led by the late Dr Elliott Jaques, began a concerted effort to bring the discipline of science to the practice of management. They sought to develop explicit theories with hypotheses (predictions) and to test their validity. Wilfred (later Lord) Brown was the managing director of Glacier Metals who collaborated with Jaques in developing the ideas and putting them into practice (see Jaques, 1951; Brown, 1960; Brown and Jaques, 1965; Brown, 1971; Gray, 1976; Jaques, 1976). ...
