Abstract
This chapter examines the resource aspects of distributed systems. It is concerned with ways in which resource availability and resource usage impact on communication and on the performance of the communicating processes. The main physical resources of interest are processing power, network communication bandwidth, and memory. The discussion focuses on the need to use these resources efficiently as they directly impact on performance and scalability of applications and the system itself.
