Chapter 2. Query tuning
Chapter 1, “Logical query processing,” focused on the logical design of SQL. This chapter focuses on the physical implementation in the Microsoft SQL Server platform. Because SQL is based on a standard, you will find that the core language elements look the same in the different database platforms. However, because the physical layer is not based on a standard, there you will see bigger differences between the different platforms. Therefore, to be good at query tuning you need to get intimately familiar with the physical layer in the particular platform you are working with.
