Tableau Consumer Basics: Use Tableau’s Interactive Filters to Explore Dashboards

Pretend you are a regional manager for a chain of retail stores. Your corporate office provides reports to you via Tableau. These charts are fantastic, but unfortunately, you can’t always find the information you need about your region or answer questions specific to one of your stores. You’re familiar with the filters provided in the dashboard, but did you know that there are different ways to utilize these filters? This shortcut guide will provide a broad overview of the potential capabilities of Tableau filters to help you dig further into data and interact with it in a more informed way.

Even if you’re familiar with filters, there are still several tips that will make working with them more useful and enjoyable! There are multiple types of filters, but they can be broken down into three distinct categories:

Single Select

This type of filter forces you to choose one and only one option (parameters also do this, and for the purpose of this shortcut are indistinguishable from single select filters). There is a possibility that All is available as one of the options, allowing you to select all listed values at once. These will appear as a pull-down menu, radio button, or on rare occasions, a slider bar.
