Dark environments are some of the most difficult situations for any digital camera, even before you factor the small lenses and sensors in the iPhone cameras. A sensor records light, and when there isn’t much of it, you typically need to turn to other ways of adding illumination, such as adding alternative light sources or shooting long exposures that record more light over a period of time.
In this context, it’s remarkable to learn that smartphones are some of the best low-light cameras around. Thanks largely to computational photography, the iPhone can reveal details in dark scenes you didn’t even know were there.
