Guidelines for Writing Task Analyses

Task analysis can require a considerable investment of time, energy, and resources. Get the most from your analysis project by following these suggestions.

For your first draft of the analysis, describe the tasks as they currently exist. Do not include any suggested improvements or “what if” proposed changes to the process. Annotate these items in an appendix or footnote and have SMEs or expert reviewers verify.

Include all elements or work activities that are the employee's responsibility regardless of how long or how often they are performed. Tasks that can take only minutes to perform can be as vital to the job as those that take months to complete.
