Protocols and Communications Models

To many of us, protocols present images of thick incomprehensible documents and never-ending committees. An idea that may start in very simple form may be presented to a panel of experts for consideration. They will debate and discuss options and alternatives, no matter how obscure and improbable, and pages and pages of comments, recommendations and addenda will result. It all ends up as a thousand page plus set of manuscripts, in a language assured to baffle layman and expert alike. On the other hand, this kind of work is necessary, if only to avoid confusion and arguments.
