Data Link Management
This chapter describes the support provided by the data link layer. This layer is responsible for providing node-to-node communications within a single local network. In other words, the layer manages control and flow of data between each of the nodes of a network. The two relevant operations here are addressing, where each node or station is assigned a unique address so that they can recognize each other, and translation, where messages arriving from one layer (upper or lower) are converted to messages the opposite layer can understand.
