When we teach elementary statistical techniques we frequently use small data sets—for very good reasons. With small data sets, statistics such as the mean, interquartile range, and so on are quickly and easily calculated by hand, allowing students to gain an understanding of the processes behind the statistics, as encapsulated by the formulas.
