Open-Corner Platforms

 

Open-corner construction of parallel platforms is a standard construction method used in most professional scene shops. The method described below reduces the time needed to build parallel platforms, making them a practical platforming choice.

BUILD A JIG

Begin by taking two short pieces of the framing stock you intend to use and attach corner block material to their faces. Next, lay them out end to end and fasten the two pieces together with the type of hinge you intend to use. Bend the pieces to a 90° angle — this defines the open-corner measurement, which includes the gap created by the hinge, the corner-block thickness, and the framing-stock thickness. See Figure 1.
