When a costume design calls for armor, hoopskirts, bustles, novelty metal costumes, or oversized animal suits, the costume shop can use the expertise of the scene shop’s metal worker to advantage. Tracing the development and construction of the metal corset described here will help clarify the primary concerns of the costumer — the actor’s safety and comfort — and the potential contribution of the metal worker. The approach used to build this corset could be used in building armor or any other metal costume.
