Disappearing Footlights

A Yale School of Drama production for which I was the Master Electrician called for a 10′-long foot-light unit at the front edge of the deck to disappear quickly after the first scene and remain hidden throughout the rest of the play. The simple and inexpensive two-part device we used allowed ten Pro-cans to swing downward simultaneously and then be hidden behind a specially rigged commando-cloth masking panel. Assistant Technical Director Jim Kempf developed the conceptual outlines of the rig. Building and installing this rig took only a few hours, and (not counting the Pro-cans themselves) the components cost less than $50.
