Spec sheets (the shortened version of specification sheets) are often called data sheets, specs, or specs on drawings. The most common types of spec sheets are written for hardware, software, manufacturing, and safety. Spec sheets can be prepared as blueprints to outline the product a company will be building, what it’s going to look like, its specific requirements and functions, intended users, safety requirements, and more.
These are analogous to construction drawings, which are the backbone of every construction project. Spec sheets can be issued to detail safety requirements (as you’ll see in the examples at the end of this chapter). Spec sheets may be written by engineers, technicians, programmers, and technical writers.
