Technological progress has impacted the labor market in various ways during the last 250 years. In particular, we can single out three different historical and theoretical phases, three waves in the current evolution of and debate on the relation between technological progress and employment, with a progressive radical change of perspective in recent years likely caused by the possible (future) consequences of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
