The contents of this chapter, as well as the contents of the Appendix “Milestones in the history of science”, associated with this chapter, have been based on numerous encyclopaedic sources, mainly on the articles devoted to the history of science and great figures of science, published in Encyclopædia Britannica Online¹, in Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy² and in the book Human Accomplishment³.
