The contents of this chapter, as well as the contents of the Appendix “Milestones in the history of science”, associated with this chapter, have been based on numerous encyclopaedic sources, mainly on the articles devoted to the history of science and great figures of science, published in Encyclopædia Britannica Online1, in Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy2 and in the book Human Accomplishment3.
