Profiles help to cluster users based on similar traits. This gives you an advantage when you want to change parameters for multiple users at once. When a profile is changed for a user, it's applied to a user based on the option changed:
- Spool and perm/temp space allocation are imposed immediately
- Password attributes take effect upon the next logon
- Account IDs and default database are considered at the next logon
