In Chapter 1 we have discussed the two broad categories of wireless optical systems—the outdoor free space systems that gives both the space and terrestrial links, and the confined indoor systems. The optical signal experiences different propagating media in all the three cases and, therefore, the channel characteristics in these systems are not the same. In this chapter, we give the physical characteristic of the wireless optical channel, both in the outdoor and indoor environment. Understanding of the physical phenomenon associated with the channel and the deployment details of the link are of great importance when designing the transmitter and receiver systems of the FSO.
