8.1 INTRODUCTION

Speech is the primary, and most convenient, means of communication between people (Juang & Furui, 2000). Whether it is due to a technological curiosity to build machines that mimic humans or to the desire to automate work with machines, research in machine recognition of human speech, as the first step toward natural human–machine communication, has attracted much enthusiasm over the past 5 decades.
