Abstract
This chapter starts by explaining the primary facilities for cooling boiling water reactors after shutdown. The main part of the chapter lists the sequence of events from the earthquake and tsunami, to station blackout, hydrogen explosion, and finally how personnel succeeded in keeping the multiple reactors cooled. The accident continued for about 1 week with four reactor units, Units 1 through 4, of Fukushima-1. Units 1 and 3 exploded in that order.
