POPULATION ANDPOVERTY

The closely associated world problems of poverty and population growth represent one of the most dangerous 2030 drivers. Although considerable progress has been made in the fight against starvation, almost 9 million people, three-quarters of them children under five, are killed by hunger every year.1 This compares with 12.5 million 10 years ago, 15 million 20 years ago. A total of 770 million people are classified as ‘desperately hungry’.2 There are more than 2 billion people with incomes lower than $2 a day. Three billion people – half the global population – get less protein daily than the average domestic cat in the Western world.
