‘3D’ – a buzzword of our time – is most often used to describe something that is actually flat but has the effect, or gives the illusion, of depth. Developments in 3D technology have revitalized the movie industry in recent years, with feature films such as Avatar pointing to a new era of submersive storytelling. Interactive virtual software has irreversibly changed the working methods of surgeons, engineers, architects and automobile designers. And around the corner is the often promised, and perhaps soon to be fully realized, real-time holographic projection.
