AI Hero: Julián
When thinking about AI heroes, Julián is the first person who comes to my mind. He doesn’t have a PhD. He’s not a regular speaker at AI research conferences. He hasn’t published any papers or pioneered any core AI breakthroughs. Still, he represents the new wave of innovation that will truly transform the world we live in. The next big AI innovations will not only come from technology providers, but from industries like manufacturing, retail, banking, or—as in Julián’s case—health care. These innovations will be driven by people who are connected to and knowledgeable about the problem domain, motivated to solve it, and empowered with democratized AI technologies.
Julián’s motivation started in the middle of a Christmas holiday—the first one for his son Sergio, who was two months old at the time. When Julián heard his wife Lucía calling him to the bathroom he immediately knew something was wrong. That was the first time Sergio suffered a seizure episode, but unfortunately it wouldn’t be the last.
Initially, Sergio had seizures once every two months, but soon they were happening up to eight times a day. Often, when Sergio had one of these episodes, his parents had to take him to the emergency room so that doctors could induce a coma to stop the seizing, while trying to prevent neurological damage.
