MY MEANDERING JOURNEY TO THE CORNER OFFICE

Right after I turned 14, my best friend’s mom, Mrs. Farmer, pulled me out of my midmorning freshman math class. She and the school principal knocked on the door and then had a word with the teacher, who instructed me to go with them. They didn’t say anything other than my friend’s mom needed to take me home.

I grew up in rural Vermont and went to school in a unified school district. My high school served several small towns along the spine of the northern Green Mountains. I lived a long way from school. Mrs. Farmer and I knew each other well. Her three boys were soccer stars.
