Returning to England, to the Midlands city of Nottingham, the new 40000m2 headquarters of the UK's Inland Revenue Department is on a brownfield site south of the city centre. Situated between the main canal and railway line, and overlooked by Nottingham Castle, the campuslike headquarters is made up of six office buildings, two three-storey quadrangular blocks and four L-shaped (two of three storeys and two of four storeys) grouped around an amenity building (Figure 10.1). The complex is designed to house ∼1800 office workers—a result of the decision to relocate the Department from London to Nottingham (Buchanan, 1995).
