Although all digital compositing systems share the same basic concepts and algorithms, the method by which a user interacts with the system can vary widely. This interaction is primarily determined by the user interface that is provided with the software in question. These days, this user interface is typically a graphical front end to the tools, and hence is usually referred to as simply the GUI (graphical user interface).
