Glossary of Terms
Throughout the book, you may have run across words and terms that are unfamiliar to you. While you may know the definition of the words, perhaps you have not encountered them the way they are used here. This glossary should help you with any terminology that is new for you. While terms may differ from company to company, these are all fairly common usages.
AAE: Action—Adjustment—Expectation. A three-column method of blocking notation that focuses on where the actor moves, how the actor adjusts, and why.
Activation: The process of an actor breathing life into and fleshing out a character.
Actor-manager: A pre-twentieth-century term for an actor who also served as the de facto general manager of a theatre company.
