Applying Proportions

Now I’ll demonstrate how to use these proportions in a drawing. To determine the proportions of the cup and saucer I used the height of the coffee cup’s ellipse as my unit of measurement. As I compared this unit of measurement to other parts of the subject, I found the following:

  • The width of the ellipse of the coffee cup is slightly more than 2 times the length of my unit of measurement, or 2:1.
  • The height of the cup and saucer together are slightly more than 2.5 times the length of my unit of measurement.
  • The width of the saucer at its widest point is approximately 3.5 times the length of my unit of measurement.
