Refining Values

We have now made our first attempts at drawing all of the light and shadow conditions of the sphere. It is now time to refine the values. The specific values will depend on the subject you are drawing, how it is lit, and even personal preference. In this final drawing I have darkened the upper edge of the core shadow to an approximate #4.5 value. Additionally, I darkened the reflected light because I thought it appeared too bright. I also darkened the center light to make the highlight stand out more.

For the highlight to truly gleam, it is important that it is the brightest value in the entire drawing. Therefore, I added some value in the background so that the only white of the paper visible in the drawing is the highlight. ...
