Shading Basic Volumes

The best way to learn how to shade is to light your own objects and draw them from observation. Find a spherical object, a cylindrical object, and a cube-like object. You can purchase geometric volumes made of wood at many hardware stores. Wood is an excellent material for studying the effects of light because it is just reflective enough to have clear highlights but not so reflective that its surface becomes mirror-like. You can also find these volumes around your house. An orange or a ball could work as a sphere, a coffee cup or cylindrical pitcher would work as a cylinder, and a cardboard or wooden box could work as a cube. It is best if these objects do not have any text, images, or patterns on their surfaces. ...
