CHAPTER 2 AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SKELETON

In the previous chapter, you learned how to simplify the figure into a dynamic gesture drawing that captures the action of the pose. In this chapter, you will learn to add structure to your gesture drawings by incorporating the rigid framework of the skeleton.

In many ways a skeletal drawing has the opposite attributes of a gesture drawing. A gesture drawing feels more expressive and freer, while a skeletal drawing is more rigid and mechanical. This tension is critical to figure drawing. A compelling figure drawing should appear to be caught between emotive beauty and technical accuracy. If gesture drawing is an art, then skeletal drawing is a science.
