CHAPTER 5 DRAMATIC LIGHT AND SHADOW

You have arrived at the shading chapter. Hopefully you have accepted that figure drawing is a process. The different phases of the figure drawing process must all work together and build off one another. Gesture drawing provides us with a dynamic starting point. We structure the gesture drawing with the skeleton. Upon that armature we sculpt the volumes and forms of the body using descriptive contours. During the final stage of the drawing we create the illusion of light and shadow. Some areas of the figure will be exquisitely described as light falls across every undulation, illuminating muscles, bones, and curves of flesh.
