Audio basics

In audio engineering there are many concepts which appear in almost every topic. The deciBel is a good example of a universal concept. Magnetism is important in microphones, motors, transformers, recording tape and loudspeakers. These and other common concepts are covered in this chapter.

2.1 Periodic and aperiodic signals

Sounds can be divided into these two categories and analysed both in the time domain in which the waveform is considered, or in the frequency domain in which the spectrum is considered. The time and frequency domains are linked by transforms of which the most well known is the Fourier transform.
