Preface

When I began teaching the Beginning Typography class at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2000, I looked for a typography book that I could use as a supplement for the class. I quickly learned that there were no books on the market that would suit my needs. None of the books contained everything I was looking for, and most were too general in their coverage of typography and its basic rules. That is the reason I wrote this text.

It began as a short, photocopied book that I gave to my students to complement my lectures and for reference.
