For the first few years after moving to New
York, I would go to the gatherings at Strawberry
Fields in Central Park on the anniversary of John
Lennon’s death on December 8. Strawberry
Fields is a landscaped area with a memorial
mosaic right across Central Park West from
the Dakota building, where John lived and
was murdered in 1980. I’m not sure why I was
so drawn to it. Like tens of millions of people
before and since, I “discovered” The Beatles at
the age of 16, roughly 20 years after the band
had broken up.
