Being a Product Owner may be a calling, but it is seldom a first job. I have yet to meet a Product Owner who has not moved into the role from a related position. Product Owners can come from almost anywhere, but overwhelmingly they either have history with a product they own or a similar product.

A few Product Owners are from support, consulting, or training roles. After years of helping clients use the product, they transition to direct product development.
