WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
Coaching is a very valuable managerial technique. It is beneficial for both developing and growing people and also for dealing with performance and motivational issues. Coaching is primarily aimed at those who have the ‘skill’ (see Figure 2.1, Skill versus will matrix). When you coach someone you are assuming they have the ability to work things out for themselves with a bit of encouragement and support. As a manager, your job is to provide this encouragement and support.
