CHAPTER 18: DISCIPLINED AND CALM

Over a millennium, our minds and bodies evolved to react to the life-threatening situations we found ourselves in. This fight-or-flight response is an automatic physiological reaction to an event perceived as stressful, dangerous or frightening and it was highly effective when dangerous beasts roamed around our neighbourhood. The perception of threat activates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers an acute stress response that prepares the body for battle or to head with haste for the nearest place of safety.
