Chapter 2 explained how audio devices are measured by professionals using modern test gear. Sadly, many people can’t afford $10,000 or more for a precision analyzer, or even $400 for a basic oscilloscope. But there are many tests you can do yourself without measuring equipment. For example, the Wave files included with Chapter 3 let you assess the audibility of low-level artifacts just by listening through your own speakers or headphones.
