Until the merger of Petrochemicals and Plastics Divisions in 1981, Mond Division was the largest of the ICI divisions. In 1980 Mond represented 15–20% of ICI's interests in the UK in terms of capital assets, sales, and number of employees. As well as being large Mond had two other claims to prominence within the ICI group. One was its roots not only in the foundation of ICI in 1926, but before that to Brunner, Mond Ltd and the United Alkali Company. In addition, for most of the 1970s Mond had been second only to Agricultural Division in terms of the size and stability of its profits to the ICI Group.
